unusual DHCP problem

Hi All,

I have a DHCP problem, please see the following scenario:

I have had a DHCP server (called “DHCP1 Win2k server) in my old domain
(Domain A) for last three years, which has distributed ip addresses to the
client machines without any problem; we have setup a new domain (Domain B)
two months ago, I have setup another DHCP server (called “DHCP2 Win2k3
server) which has been authorized in both domain’s Active Directory and
decommissioned the old DHCP server (DHCP1); however the client machines are
not able to get the ip addresses from the new DHCP server.

I tried to setup another three machines (win2k and win2k3 boxes) as the new
DHCP server, same results--- the client machines are not able to get the ip
addresses from the new DHCP server; however as soon as I put the DHCP1 back,
everything works fine, the client machines get the ip addresses from the old
DHCP server instantly.

Both DHCP servers are in the same VLAN, both domains have the trust
relationship.

Could any one tell me what is the root cause or possible reasons of my DHCP
problem?

Your help and information would be much appreciated.

Regards

John Wan

What type of switched support your VLAN? If Cisco you need to enable the IP
Helper feature on them.

Hi Todd,

We use RiverStone 8600 as the core infrastructure, I do not need the IP
Helper feature on it as both DHCP servers are in the same VLAN.

Also DHCP1 works just fine, but why not DHCP2.

Thanks for your information and help.

So you're saying that DHCP2, after being authorized, cannot give out IP
configuration to clients in the same VLAN *even* with DHCP1 turned off and
*after* having the clients run and ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew?

Is DHCP2 using a static IP address? Any errors in it's event log? And on
the client?

Hi Tood,

DHCP2 is using a static IP address, there are not any errors in it's event
log and in the client's evenr log.

However I have setup a Linux box dhcp server ten minutes ago, which is
working fine, but why not windows DHCP?

I think you need to delete rebuild the scope on DHCP2 sounds like something
is corrupted inside the DHCP database.

Hi Todd,

I have rebuilt DHCP2 at least 10 times in 5 different machines, but no luck.

Regards

John
