Im using a Linksys router with dd-wrt on and WPA encryption. Sometimes tho
when my laptop connects to the network it comes up as connected to
blahblah(Unsecured).

Does that mean anyone can just jump on the router? Ive tried connecting
without a key but it wont let me on so im a bit confused about this
Unsecured bit. Whats going on and is it a security risk.

Thanks

Gordy

You're probably connecting to a different network, e.g. a neighbour who
has stupidly left theirs wide open. Probably on 192.168.1.1 and probably
with the default router password also.

As already suggested, probably means there's another network nearby
with the same SSID. You did change the SSID to something different,
didn't you?...

Yes its deffinitly connecting to my router/ssid but say a qtr of the time
when connected it comes up as (unsecured). Im a bit confused as to what that
means as i cant connect without a password.

Odd problem. Might be worth starting from scratch and unistalling the lot
and start again ?

All I could think of that might help.

Have you just seen this on one PC? If it's happening on more than one PC, it
probably won't help to uninstall+reinstall one PC's wireless software etc.

Are you using the software that came with the wireless card or are you
letting Windows control the connection to wireless. Might be worth changing
from one to the other (if the wireless adaptor has the option of being
controlled by its own software) to see if the symptoms are any different.

Has a PC ever been able to connect to the netword without supplying the WPA
key? If not, it looks as if you *are* secure, despite appearances to the
contrary sometimes, and you may decide that the hassle of uninstalling isn't
worth it.

Some do say "unsecured" when it is not encrypted by WPA. WEP appears to
be not considered secure these days.
