Unsecured Belkin connection

I set up a Belkin wireless connection between my laptop and the cable
modem of a desktop computer but it is an unsecured link. But when I
try to change this to an encryption-protected configuration, it is no
accepted. The message is that the settings are incompatible with the
connection setup.

My O/S is Vista.

What can I do about this?
