Unix + Windows Server

I want to establish a 6 Terminal LAN

I have business software that I will need to access continually, that will
only run on a Unix Platform. I have other business software that will only
run on Windows platform.

I know of another user who uses similar software to me but on a much bigger
scale (50 terminals WAN). They have a dedicated Unix Server for the Unix
software and a dedicated Windows server for the WAN. The Winserver then
accesses the Unix server for the Unix application and some remote terminals
access it using IP address and Telnet.

My question is can one machine be configured to be both Unix and Windows
Server at the same time? If so, can it be a high spec PC, like for a small
Winserver?

I am employing somebody to set up the network, I just need to know what can
be done.

Many Thanks

You could run VMWare <http://www.vmware.com/> - but I'd just get two
machines myself.

ACK, despite the license costs for vmware and hardware costs for a
machine equipped enough to run a server in vmware, two
machines are independent, so if one fails the other is still
accessible.

You may look for an as400, of course

There are many terminals that can do x11 and rdp, if you plan to
use PCs as terminals look at ltsp, which can do rdp, too.

You can use something like VMware, to run Windows under Linux. There'd be
performance issues though. Also, some Windows apps can run with Wine or
Crossover Office.

For that purpose I have a Linux Server runnig SAMBA that is seen as a
Windows Server by the Windows Clients. I also run MarsNWE to emulate a
Netware Server on the same Box the same time. No problem at all, runs
smooth with no seen Performance decrease in additionally using the same
Box as my main Workstation (=non dedicatet server).

VMWare is fine but more performance expensive than my solution here
