Uninstalling wireless router

I've been asked to unplug a Belkin wireless router from a friend's
computer (WinME) and plug the cable modem back directly into the
computer's NIC. The router was used in a failed attempt to share the
cable modem with this guy's mother who is temporarily living in his
back yard in a 5th wheel. There was just too much interference to get
through all that brick at that angle, then into the metal box that is
the 5th wheel. When I just unplugged the router and plugged the cable
modem directly back into the NIC, the internet no longer worked. I'm
new to wireless networking and am not sure what I should uninstall
after unplugging the router. Any suggestions where I need to begin?
Thanks.

This is a FAQ in the ntl newsgroups.

Turn EVERYTHING off. Attach all the cables.
Turn on the modem, Wait one minute.
***
Turn on the PC, wait one minute
Magically it will all work.

Explanation: If you change the network device plugged into the modem,
you need to power everything down for long enough for ntl to release
the MAC binding at their end, so that you can get a new IP for the
new device.

If you ever reinstall the router, then at the line marked *** above,
turn on the router and wait one minute.

Thanks. That makes sense. I guess I thought I'd turned everything
off. However, I probably turned off the computer and only tried
turning off the modem for a moment after the computer had already
booted up again.
