Win98SE networked to XP Home
Printer on XP machine is network printer. (HP Deskjet 710C)

I am trying to get rid of a network printer connected via network to a
Win98SE machine and install a different printer directly on the Win98SE
machine but it continually fails as it can't find LPT1.
LPT1 is configured for the network printer and I can't free it up so the
directly connected printer can use it.

I have uninstalled the relevant printer software on the win98SE and
installed the new printer software (and subsequently uninstalled it)
I have tried removing LPT1 in device manager on the 98SE machine and let
it reinstall
I have tried deleting the port in the Win98SE printer dialoge - it won't
allow deletion as it is "in use by a network printer" - even if I switch
the networked machine and printer off. It is labelled on the Win98SE
machine as LPT1[XPMachinenetworkprintername]
I have switched off printer sharing on the Win98SE machine and on the XP
machine.

I have no trace of any printer, network or otherwise on the Win98SE but
the LPT1 is still blocked.

How do I clear the Win98SE LPT1 please so a directly installed printer
can use it? I still want to maintain the network but no longer use
printer sharing. Each computer will have its directly connected printer.

If I look in Network Neighbourhood there is no reference to any printers
so I can't delete or adjust them (this was the procedure described in
Win98SE help.

I'm sure I'm missing something simple. Many thanks to any who can help.

have you tried removing LPT1: in the device manager , reboot and let it
reinstall ? (that 'should' clear out any remnants)

Yes - I tried that. No joy.
What finally solved it seemed to be a button labelled End Port Capture
in the printer properties dialog - that gave me a vanilla LPT1 back -
obviously the port had been "captured" by the network printer and
wouldn't be released till that button was pressed.
Thanks for the reply. Problem solved I hope.
