Uninstall Alcatel Broadband - problems reestablishing dial-up?

reloading an old pc I have used a plug and play Alcatel
modem to download all the Windows 98se/Office updates.
The machine will not be used by a broadband user so the
P&P modem was uninstalled and a new dial up connection
via an internal modem attempted.

On trying to establish a dial up connection the dialler
hangs and the mouse can only move very slowly. You
cannot get out of this. so Alt+ctl +del or crash it!

Has anyone had similar problems please
