i recently placed an order with bt adsl broadband (i do this every so
often as i seem to get differing reasons why i cant have it) - over
the last three years, the reasons have been quoted as:

1 exchange not enabled, then
2 too far from exchange, then
3 fibre optic line to house (new house when i moved in three
years ago).

i decided to battle bt and get the fibre optic changed, so placed the
order again two weeks ago.

AMAZINGLY, on thursday, i got a phone call (after not receiving any
contact from when i placed the order) saying that the engineer was
working to change my line over to copper, and that they would contact
me once this was completed. on friday, i received my adsl modem pack.

i had prepared myself for a big battle with them to get my line
changed over - but they must have seen the light in that for nearly 30
quid a month, they might as well change the line over anyway.

so, anyone else who has been given this reason (excuse) in the past -
it might be worth your while trying again - at least going direct to
BT for the ISP means they cant blame anyone else for the line not
working.

Great that you've got ADSL sorted!

Does it strike anyone else as rather depressing that this chap is delighted
he's succeeded in getting his new fibre optic line downgraded to copper?

BT Wholesale have slowly been installing copper to overlay their fibre
network in many of the areas where customers are on TPON lines (i.e.
connected by fibre), so that those customers can qualify for ADSL.

Looks like you are in one of those areas and are benefiting..

Sunil

Well done!! Can you ring up BT on my behalf and get them to give me a
shorter line?

So you have a direct fibre optic line from the exchange to your house?
is this common for new houses 3 years ago or did you go anything special
to get it...

seems ironic that they can't provide anything over new fibre to the home
technology, but they can over copper...

It will be a TPON line - fibre to the local cab and then copper into the
houses.

BT started deploying these when they thought fibre was the way forward
(before ADSL became viable) - mainly to new housing estates or where the
existing copper ducting was virtually full and they needed more capacity

There are only about 45,000 lines on TPON..

ADSL needs copper all the way back to the exchange..

Actually they /can/ offer ADSL over fibre backbones - after all the
exchanges are typically linked by fibre. Its just a bit expensive
sticking the necessary hardware in each cabinet.

Uhhh, once it reaches the DSLAM in the exchanges, there ceases to
be an ADSL signal.

Hi,

What do you expect from BT? :-)

This is the company who said you couldn't do DSL over ISDN until it was
pointed out that that is what happens in Germany! :-)

One day perhaps BT will be on the cutting edge ;-)
