You cannot "fix" this. This is how TCP/IP works. If you are on a 192.168.1.x/24
net your machine will look for the server on your subnet (i.e. the local
network) it will never send traffic to the RAS connection. You can however make
the subnet smaller on the client side. If the mask on the client side is
255.255.255.248 and your address is 192.168.1.1 for example you will send
packets to any address between 192.168.1.8 and 192.168.1.254 because these
machines are not on your subnet.
