unable to set default gateway

I am unable to set a default gateway. Whether manually or
via DHCP my default gateway remains blank.If I search for
the required IP address in the registry it appears once in
Hkey_local_machine/system/current
controlset/control/services/class/NetTrans/0000/defaultgate
way
I have removed all networking protocols and the nic
and 'rebuilt' it from scratch, but to no avail.

I'm not claiming to have the answer as my knowledge is limited but
what is going wrong that you need to alter the gateway.
