Unable to print XP to 98 shared printer?

I have some bizarre issues on a 3 station mixed OS network [1]

Machine's 1 & 2 are Win98SE, machine 3 is a Compaq laptop running XP
Home

No's. 1 & 2 were on a P2P TCP/IP network, directly connected by a x-
over cable. An Epson printer is connected to No. 1

Both machines could share files/folders, and No.2 could print to the
Epson C20SX printer. There were no known issues with this 2 station
setup.

I added a D-Link switch[2] into the equation so i could add the laptop
onto the network, mainly to be able to print to the Epson printer.

When adding the printer to the laptop as a networked printer, i tell it
to look to No.1 to find the printer, it sees the printer, asks for the
location of the drivers, and installs them off the CD drive (it does
install Win2000 drivers, but these are also the correct XP drivers
according to Epson)

The laptop can see No, 1, it's files and folders, and the printer under
the network browser, but the moment i print a test page, a message is
displayed that it was "unable to print".

So i tried to print from No. 2 to verify the printer is correctly
networked. I can print without issue from No.2 to No.1

So, there is no issue when printing between the 98 machines, but when
printing from the XP machine, there is an error.

I can see the printer showing on the network when i browse the network
using the laptop, but i can't actually print anything to it.

The 2nd problem is that the laptop can see No.2 on the network, but
clicking it's icon in Network Places results in an "inaccessible" error
message basically suggesting i don't have the correct rights to access
the 98 machine!

When i joined the laptop onto the existing network, i set the IP
address as below, the subnet, and the workgroup.

Surely i don't need to run the XP Network wizard ?!??!

What considerations do i need to place in mind when networking a 'mix'
of OS's such as i have??

I've ruled out a switch/hub problem as each PC can see the other, and
can access files/folders without issue.

Any ideas on the printing issue??
