My knowledge of Windows 2003 server is limited. I cannot ping an external web site from any of the PC but I can view them Via IE. I get this error when I ping ( an Example www.cnn.com) also happens with any external sites

Pinging cnn.com [64.236.24.4] with 32 bytes of data

Request timed out
Request timed out
Request timed out
Request timed out

Ping statistics for 64.236.24.4
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss)

I do think something is wrong with the way the DNS is setup but I’m not familiar with it and do not want to mess anything up. Please help

The server is Windows 2003 Standard and the pc that is having this problem. (all other pc also have same problem.) is a Windows Xp pro I also have windows 2000 pro and win 98 pc

Actually your DNS is working fine as shown by the line below

> Pinging cnn.com [64.236.24.4] with 32 bytes of data

This line shows your resolver was able to resolve cnn.com to 64.236.24.
Your DNS works.

Not knowing much about your network I would say the MOST likel
reason is that ICMP is being blocked by a firewall. Which is actuall
a good thing. This will stop ping floods and ping sweeps. (the ICMP version anyways

Even if your firewall allowed the ICMP protocol this doesn't guarantee you wil
be able to *ping* someone on the internet. I ran a BSD firewall for years at hom
and would DROP any ICMP echo requests that came at me.

Hope that helps.

As the other reply states, this ain't no problem. Most sensible admins block
inbound ICMP packets. I do know that one can get replies by pinging
www.yahoo.com because I often have users do that as a test.

Even if there were DNS problems, they wouldn't be related to your internal
AD DNS anyway. But there aren't any in this case. :-)
