I am able (via internet) to ping (DSL) modem and server (e-smith w/gateway)
but no PC's behind server.
All have static addresses and can access the internet thru server.

Must be something disallowing access from internet side.

Anyone have any suggestions about what to look at.

Insufficient data. Do the boxes behind the server have public or private
IPs (masqueraded?). Even if public IPs routed by your ISP, routing has to
be correct on your end and any firewall has to allow what you want in.
For example if you have a common /29 public block, netmask for your
internal nic might be 255.255.255.248, but public ISP connection (pppoe)
might have 255.255.255.255 netmask and host route to gateway, since
only route in that direction is to ISP's default gateway.
