Unable to obtain DHCP lease - "Data is Invalid"

Hi all. I have a fresh install of Windows 2003 Server on a Dell Optiplex 620
(it's a test server for an application we might purchase).

The Dell has an onboard Broadcom NetXtreme 57xxx Gigabit Controller, and
also has a Dell W1392 Intel Pro/1000MT NIC in a PCI slot.

Driver versions for the NICs are:
Broadcom: 9.52.0.0 5/15/2006
Intel PRO/1000MT: 7.2.17.0 8/14/2003
They are the newest drivers available from the manufacturers' sites.

Both NICs obtain autoconfig (169.254.x.x) addresses when enabled. When
attempting to run IPCONFIG/RENEW, I receive the following error.

An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection: The data
is invalid.

I tried the same cables and drops into another machine, and it had no
problems obtaining valid IPs and leases. First, I thought the stack might be
corrupt, so I ran

NETSH INT IP RESET LOG.TXT

I can post the results from the log, but the long and short is that there
were no errors, and the command completed successfully. I followed the
instructions at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325356/en-us for removing and
reinstalling TCP/IP, and still have no luck.

I'm fresh out of ideas - can anyone help?

I ran into the same problem. My trouble was I was Trying to plug the
server into a switch whose particular port I was using was setup for
VLAN and hence had a static IP setting. I would attempt to chekc out
the switch configuration or try plugging the computer into a jack you
know for sure is issuing dhcp addresses.

As I mentioned in the original post, I tried the same cable and same port
into another machine, which was able to obtain DHCP with no problem.

1. Make sure the nic you are going to use is the first one in the Binding
order.
Net Places Properties,...Advanced from top menu,...Advanced
Settings...from dropdown menu. Should be obvious from there.

2. Disable the nic you are not using in the Device Manager.

3. Be sure there isn't anymore "wierd stuff" going on with the switch.

4. Try again.
