Thanks for the suggestions, Robert.
I'm pretty sure it's not specifically a permissions issue because I can log onto that server via terminal services with the same ID/pwd that fails with "net use..." also, that same ID can map a drive on non-domain controllers. These are windows 2003 servers and the windows firewall is off by default.

System error 5 is permission issue. Or do you have firewall blocking the access? These search results may help,

I've seen this problem with a remote domain that's linked with a trust and
with one that has no trust relationship. I can map a drive from windows
explorer or the command line to any other server here except the domain
controllers in the remote domain. The network connectivity is good - either
on the same subnet or connected by a hardware VPN. I use the ID of a domain
admin to either an administrative share (C$) or c:\test, or a domain user to
c:\test, which is shared everyone:full control, with NTFS permissions
everyone full control.
All fail with "System error 5 has occurred. Access is denied."
Any suggestions?
