Unable to join SBS 2003 Domain on XP client

I have an XP clinet that cannot join our SBS 2003 dmoain. The XP client
receives an IP address from the server's DHCP services, can access the
internet, and can ping the server from a commnd prompt (using the name or ip
address). I right click on My computer, Computer Name, Change, and in the
domain box type in our domain (the same as all of the other clients I've
joined to the domain without issues, including XP, Windows 2000 and Vista
clients). I get a message saying "The Network Path Was not Found". I tried
updating the network driver for the NIC and even changed to a new NIC. There
is no antivirus running on either machine (client or server) at this time but
still no success. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What DNS addresses are being provided the client through DHCP?

Can you post an ipconfig /all from the SBS and the workstation in question, please?

Thanks,

Hello Beterman,

Sounds like DNS problem, please post an unedited ipconfig /all from the client
and the server. Also keep in mind that for SBS related tasks you better use
one of this:
microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs

or

https://connect.microsoft.com/sbs08/...i/default.aspx

Best regards

I've tried it after setting the Primary DNS Suffix to gray.local, also without
success.

Thanks for any assistance.

Hello Beterman,

The Search Suffix also needs to be set in order for the client side resolver to use the suffix to query DNS using the search suffix. Usually the search suffix is automatically populated once you've set the Primary DNS Suffix and have restarted the workstation. Provide an updated ipconfig /all of the workstation to see if the search suffix is populated. If not, the NIC settings could have been altered to not populate it (IP properties, DNS tab).

You can also supply it automatically in DHCP - Scope or Server Option 015 - populate it with gray.local, then renew the workstation's config with ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew.

Set the primary DNS Suffix to gray.local without success. I did reboot the

This actually looks fine. Thank you for posting it.

Is there a firewall enabled on the workstation or on the SBS server? How about ISA?

No firewall on the client. I made sure that the firewall was turned off on
the NIC. The SBS server does not have a firewall between it and the clients.
ISA is not installed. Not sure if I mentioned that I can ping the server from
the client using the Server name and/or the IP address. All of the other
workstations on the network (approx. 26) can and have been joined to the
domain without incident.

I read an article on the Net that mentioned WINSOCK being corrupt. I tried
removing the "Client for Microsoft Networks" service and reinstalling it and
it didn't make a difference. I know that TCP/IP really directly interacts
with the
WINSOCK but I was unable to remove and reinstall the TCP/IP protocol. I'm
not sure if it's because the NIC is setup for DHCP or if this even has
anything to do
with this situation.

Thanks for any insight.

Interesting. You've got an interesting issue. One of the three following
links should help you with resetting TCP/IP on XP:

How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)... TCP/IP might be causing it.

FYI., not to get off track, as for the winsock.dll, it's actually above the
TCP (layer 4) and IP (layer 3), so it's not that it directly works with it,
but Winsock relies on TCP and IP for communication. So it is possible the
problem is with TCP/IP, and not necessarily the winsock.dll. I mean you can
unregister winsock.dll, then copy a new file over, then re-register it. But
I would go ahead and work on resetting TCP/IP. More info below on
winsock.dll....
