Unable to get 98 machine on the network

I struggled with this with another windows 98 machine last week, but in the
end was able to get it worked out by installing the dsclient9x. This machine
is a different story. When I try to install the dsclient9x it tells me that
the version of the windows installer is too old and to install a service pack.

I compared the properties of this machine to the one I was successfully able
to install on the other machine and they look the same to me from what I can
tell, but I really don't know windows 98 too well.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Oh the error I get is "the
system could not log you in, DC not available" Which is slightly different
than what I was getting with the other machine "The password you supplied
for the domain is incorrect or the logon server denied you access".

Go to Windows Updates and get the machine up to date. That should fix the
installer version issue. Once you've got the dsclient9x installed, see if
that doesn't fix your logon problems.

internet?

you will have to download it on another machine that has an internet
connection and "walk it" to the problem machine ...you will need the updated
installer to continue ..

As has been suggested, you will need to download to another computer and
transfer to the target computer.

InstMsiA - version - 2.0.2600.2

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
Windows Installer 2.0 Redistributable for Windows 95, 98, and Me -1.62 meg

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
Windows Installer 2.0 Redistributable for Windows NT 4.0 and 2000.

NOTE: there apparently were two downloads for the 2.0 installer .01 and .02
[from Microsoft], if problems develop or issues such as with Office or other
installations, check for the proper version needed and applicable KBs.

My bad. Wasn't being mentally diligent. Others have provided the answer(s).
Sorry.

Thanks for the links. I tried going to windows updates from another machine,
but it wants to automatically detect the machine I'm on not the affected one.
I get bit by this a lot. How do you download updates for other computers?

The links I provided, and I think John did, were from Microsoft Download,
NOT Windows Update. If you use the Update site, it will determine what OS
and installer [XP is 3.9 or something which will NOT work in 9X/ME/NT]. So
use the links provided..

Sorry Penny, I should have added another potential way to get to files.

Once on the normal Windows Update site, you can [or should be able to] go
to the Catalog, choose a different OS and download files directly for that
OS.
