Hello,
At my workplace we are using windows 2003 server for networking and windows
XP is installed on all PCs. Sometimes when we try to access the files on the
network drive, we get the message that the device name is already in use.
This happens when a person has been working on their PCs for 2 to 3 hours
without connecting to the network drive and then they try accessing it and
the message appears. Any suggestions on why this happens?

Thank you

Do this: net use * /d and then re-logon. Or this search result may help,

System ErrorsSystem error 85 has occurred. The local device name is already in use System error 85 has occurred - Case Study System error 234 - More data is available ...

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately it didn't work. The drive doesn't show
any red Xs. The message is that "The local drive is already in use. The
connection cannot not be restored". So I tried net use \persistent:no and now
when I try to access the network drive I get this message: "U:\ is not
accessible. The system detected a possible attempt to compromise security.
Please ensure that you can contact the server that authenticated you."
In another PC the same error occurs but it alternates between the 2 messages.
Any suggestions?
