Hi,
I just installed Windows Server 2003 & it was supposed to be an upgrade,
but, ended up as a dual boot install to WinXP Pro. My problem is that when I
tried to configure Internet access, although the driver for the Network
Adapter was fine on WinXP Pro, it generates an error stating "media
disconnected". I've already installed SP1, but, that didn't fix it either.
Downloaded the driver from the Internet using another PC, but, it still
didn't work. Has anyone come across this kind of problem & if so, what did
you do to fix it? Thanks in advance for any & all help.

Norma,

The real problem I see here is that you apparently tried to do an
upgrade to Server 2003 from XP, and there is no such thing. This
implies that you may be running Server 2003 on a
desktop/workstation/other that is not considered by Microsoft to be a
server platform. Consider before you go any further that this means
that if you're ever in need of real support from Microsoft you'll be
outta luck.

Having said that, you might have a real need to do this, or it might
simply be a test lab box which is something I use daily. In this case,
try the following:
1. It's possible there's another source of drivers for your NIC. Is
the nic onboard? In the case of my test lab boxes, the NIC's are
onboard Broadcom NIC's. I can get drivers from the manufacturer of
these desktops, or I can go directly to Broadcom and get a version
there. Remember that you're running the risk that the manufacturer of
your PC or motherboard may have fiddled so that only their own drivers work.

2. Try a different NIC. If it's an add-on NIC, replace it. If it's
on-board, deactivate it in the BIOS and plug in a good PCI NIC. I've
done this before with an older SOYO motherboard using the VIA chipset.

For any future install considerations, check out Microsoft's Hardware
Compatibility site. If you've ever looked at a Linux hardware
compatibility list, they always include a line that I believe Microsoft
should include in there. "If it's not listed, it's not supported." The
old HCL link still works (redirects you to the new area.)

Good luck,

Eric Ryan

Also try setting the speed of the NIC to "Auto" instead of hard-coding it to
something the next closest link does not use.

to add my 0.000000001 cents worth, as well as the recommendation from Todd
also look into the duplex setting of the NIC. In my Lab i have two laptops
connected via crossover cable, and these would not connect without forcing
the duplex (opposite of recommendation of Todd, i know)

Hi

If your system is now dual boot ( lol - if this was an accident , as it
appears it was......seeing as there is no upgrade path from XP to 03. It may
just be better to do a clean install of '03 ) does the NIC still work in XP?
"media disconnected" generally means some fundamental connectivity issue -
Does the NIC have link lights? and if so are they on?

Do you get the "network cable unplugged" message too..?

Regards

S
