The network is on a Cisco Vlan backbone -- each of the Cisco switches have
their own subnet. DHCP on DC is configured with netbios. In network
neighborhood I can only see servers and workstations on the server subnet. I
cannot see workstations on any other subnet. I see the servers and pc's on
the server subnet from any workstation throughout the network

Network Browsing (Network Neighborhood) is netbios based,...meaning it is
not routable and only works within a single subnet when left to it's own
means. This does not effect network functionality at all, but simply means
Network Neighborhood won't show all the machines.

This is overcome by enabling "Netbios over TCP/IP" and by using a WINS
Server that all machines on the whole network use.

Phillip,
Netbios and WINS were already in place. We discovered that on the Cisco
router port 138 was not open. After opening the port on the router, we were
able to see all machines. Thank you for your reply.

Most people never put ACLs on a LAN router,...and if you do, then you
certainly don't want to block normal LAN/Ethernet/Windows based
communication. It should be the opposite of what you would block on an
Internet Firewall.

The focus should generally be:

1. Firewall = Block LAN/Ethernet/Windows "centric" traffic, Allow Internet
"centric" traffic

2. LAN Router ACLs = Block Internet "centric" traffic that you don't want
going to certain subnets, Allow LAN/Ethernet/Windows "centric" traffic.
