You need to join the domain first. If you have difficulty to join the domain, check the DNS settings.

Over the weekend I did some moving around of computers. A 2.4GHz P4
went from a 2K3 server to a XP Pro machine and a 1GHz P3 went from a XP
Pro machine to a 2K3 server, meanwhile another 2.8GHz P4 stayed the
same and joined the new active directory.
I am having a problem browsing the AD from the new XP Pro machine.
I am logged in as a user that is an admin on the AD. I go into the
Administrator group to add AD users as admin on the box. First off
there are two entries in the group, the box's administrator and a SID,
no username... When I first installed the box, the XP install could
not find the NIC drivers so I got the XP Home style of login. Once I
added it to the domain, I deleted the initial user that was created. I
believe the SID refers to that deleted user. Next I click Add users and
the location is the local machine. When I click on the Locations
button, the only location is the local machine, there is NO domain.
