Unable to acces shaed folders over VPN

We have a windows xp client connecting to an sbs 2003 server via VPN.

The xp client cannot access the shared folders. Browsing the network does
not work either.

Once offline files are synched the client can aacces the shared folders.

Any ideas what this may be? Is there a way to have the client see the shares
without the need to sych first?
