Are there any websites that list publically-available WiFi hotspots across
the UK?

Why bother... In just about every street there is now someone with a
BT Fon or Openzone connection that's publicly avalable for use.

I can "see" 2 from my office and I'm in rural Devon....

Do you mean the users not secured their BB connection, like 2 of my
neighbours.
But is not illegal to connect via them, I seem to recall someone was taken
to court.

No, I mean publicly-avalable WiFi hotspots - which is what the OP asked for.

All the BT ones are secured, but not encrypted. To use them you need
to pay BT, or be a member of their FON network thing.

In cities you may have more choice of operators though, but I suspect
there will be more BT ones than any else purely down to the way BT work.
(by turning all their customers routers into public hotspots)

Now I begin to understand something on my new unused O2 Dongle box for my
LapTop, it says I can use BT Wi-Fi hotspots, gives impression of being free,
(?), as well as the Prepaid O2 Network.

AIUI buying a daily/weekly/monthly pass for the O2 mobile broadband service
also gives you access to BT wifi hotspots for the duration of the pass. So
it isn't free, but allows you to get a better connection where wifi is
available rather than relying on 3G (or on devices that can't take the
dongle).

Sorry, I didn't make it clear. I'm looking for free hotspots such as those
available to some pub and restaurant customers etc. I'm going on holiday to
the Forest of Dean next month and wondered if there is anywhere I could
connect my netbook.

Dude, you are going on holiday. Leave the friggin' netbook at home. Get
it? H O L I D A Y - that is a *break* from the shit you do day to day,
not doing that shit somewhere else. Unless you are happy to find your
misses fucking another bloke whilst you piss around with your toys ;-)

McDonalds all have free wi-fi, usually one within a few miles.
