UK online site mentioned it blocks certain ports (8080 and others) - does this mean limited use of Newsgroup servers, or that one cannot use NGs while with UKOnline?

UKOnline doesn't have their own Usenet service - the bastards got
rid of it in January. You can, however, access external Usenet
servers such as news.individual.net and so on.

Ed - many thanks indeed.

I am still unsure of the risk of going for any 8 meg service (in case my
line not supported beyond 1 or 2 meg) so may well go for the 2 meg service.

I have been quite pleased with my NTL 512k these last 12 months. It was my
first broadband experience. Sure, it's hardly the fastest - but has been
damn reliable.

( As you were polite, you get plain text AND bottom posting <grin> )

Thanks again.

It blocks *incoming* ports only. i.e. if you attempt to run
*servers* on those limited sets of ports.

*Outgoing* ports are not blocked at all, so you have no probs using
any newsservers.

Regards,
Harry.

Ah - thanks a ton, Harry.

I live about 2.5 miles from the exchange, and get the full 8meg from UK
Online.

Thanks - will bear it in mind. Let's see what the change of month turns up
for November offers from all suppliers.
