Been reading an article on BBC
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3216973.stm

Amongst other things the article states (more than once) that BB
access in the UK is the cheapest in Europe.... This isn't right,
surely ?
I remember this was debated a few months ago in this group and the
consensus (IIRC) was that rip-off Britain was alive and well the ISP
market. Not blatantly ripping us off, but certainly charging "what the
market will bear".

I'd be interested in knowing the small print in those deals, though --
if there are any limits or cutting-back on other services. There's
often something hidden in these "country X has unlimited speed for
tuppence" stories that you read about.

For example: my brother is in Canada, and gets a 1.5MB down/384 up
ADSL service for around the same as ntl charges for the 600/128
service.

But, wait: it comes with a grand total of 4 e-mail addresses, and just
4 MB of webspace -- with additional space costing a fair amount.

Now, many -- probably most -- people would be glad to trade off some e-
mail addresses and web-space for increased speed; I probably would.
But it *does* involve a trade-off: in my brother's case, he finds the
web-space allowance so limiting that I've stored a video clip on my ntl
space for him.

It's only fair to compare like-with-like, and "X gets this speed for
this amount" is only one element of the package -- the main element,
but still only one piece of the package.

The comment seems to only said once and it was "Growth in internet access,
coupled with some of the lowest prices in Europe is excellent news" which
depending on how you read it could mean the cheapest or what is more likely
some suppliers are amoung the cheapest remember metronet is £10+vat and
Tiscali very cheap. which will be amoung the cheapest. Its comparing apples
with apples that counts not Pineaples with apples.

Well, I don't really know what the price is for a broadband access in
the UK, but in France I'm getting 2Mb/386Kb + IP phone (free calls to
any French landline and only 2p a mn to phone in the UK)
Next month they 're gonna start broadcasting TV via DSL and all of
these services are included in the EURO29.99 basic subscription.
If you want to find out more about it, it's called 'freebox'
www.free.fr (I'm afraid it's in French...!)

Belgium you can get 3MB/128KB for 30 Euros a month (21GBP approx)

That give you 10GB per month and 5 email addresses.

If you want anything more up market though the cost starts jumping, I have
to pay 140 Euros a month (97GBP) for a fixed IP address on the corporate
servers and I still only get 20GB per month and yes just like UK the line
still goes up and down. My Pipex line in London was more reliable that this
one.

In summary I would not say that UK has rip off prices when you compare
packages side by side.

10GB per month! At 3mbps, you could download 10GB in under 8 hours ffs!

What people in this country fail to realise is that more and more
services in other countries are starting to introduce data limits.

Frankly I'd rather keep my 1024/256 for £35 than have 3072/128 for £21
with a 10MB cap.

Belgium have been running Caps for about 3 years now, mind you the only
people who complained are the P2P brigade so no one took any notice of them
:-)

Like I said side by side UK is not that bad and can hold its head up with
rest of them.
