Just the one tonight ..

Broadband internet access for UK Sky Digital satellite subscribers is
to become a reality with the announcement of a deal between two of
Europes largest satellite & communication companies.

I wonder how much bandwidth there is available? Maybe someone can divide
this by the number of Sky subscribers and see what the average download
speed is likely to be.

Read carefully and you'll see the service will suffer the same pitfalls
as current 'interactive' services from Sky. Download will be from the
satellite at 512k, which is fine, but upload will be via telephone line
- 56k at best.

Impossible to calculate that way - as the satellite thats gone up (and
those that are _going_ up) will be dedicated to consumer and business
internet services with no TV down/up links.

Edit to the story :

EDIT: Prices have been confirmed : The service is expected to cost
£29.99 per month for the 512k/sec offering, however the dialup portion
of the service has not been clarified if this will be chargable or via
a freephone number. Strategies are also inplace to prevent abuse of
the service, ala Virgin's announcement of bandwidth capping for its
"overenthusiastic" users

doh - I mean to say -

PLUS the fact that its an unknown element of some 7million +
SkyDigital subscribers that could potentially subscribe to the
service.

Thats one hell of a contention rate eh? 7,000,000:1

Makes BTs standard 50:1 look appealing lol

It will also suffer from intermittent 'weather-related' problems
and I wouldn't trust "Sky" as far as I could throw Rupert
Murdoch.
