I'd say go for the router. It can be used as a firewall, and can facilitate
remote access should you ever need it. Also with a router, you are not
depending on one machine (the one with the modem) being up and connected to
the Internet. A wireless router can also open up the possibilities of
wireless networking, while also supplying your wired network.
If you've got a spare port on your switch, just connect the router to it.
