UDP and NAT errors

I am running a solo computer with dualboot Mandrake 10.1 and Win98 SE.

Azureus (BitTorrent) gtk-gnutella and EchoLink (communicating via the
Internet) all talk about NAT errors, but still work. I am running an ADSL
modem with NAT capability, but this is unused.

EchoLink now refuses to work because of a UDP error, (it can list
connections, but I can't get out) and this happens under Win98 and under
Win4Lin. I wasn't running a firewall under Win98, so it wasn't the cause.
Is this a Microsoft issue? I see that UDP is not an available protocol
under Win98, and apparently cannot be added. It seems to be newer than
TCP/IP.

TIA,

Doug.

Hmm, that's odd, if your computer itself has a public IP address and
not an internal one, I see no reason for this. If in doubt, update

Well, the problem with EchoLink disappeared when I set up my modem/router to
forward the UDP Port. Azureus is unchanged although I forwarded both TCP
and UDP, and I haven't tried with Gnutella. Both work anyway.

Two things I am not sure about in the Port Forwarding dialog: (a) the
Private Port must be entered. I just entered the first number in the
range.

And (b) an IP address has to be entered. I just copied the existing one
(port 161), which was No. 255 in the block that the router uses. Should I
make them all unique, say, counting backward from 255? The block is
192.168.
