I have an old ubuntu version - 5.10 breezy bagder. It seems that my
live cd cannot connect to the internet. What good is an os if you
cannot connect to the internet? The os is good, but it would be better
if I had access to the internet so that I can learn more about using
the os. I have posted in different forums and all they say is to
upgrade. Before you post a reply here I wish you'd go through these
forums so that you can get an idea of what the exact problem is and
what all i've done:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=526080
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=91370
http://www.neowin.net/forum/lofivers...p/t487929.html
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...=573689&page=2

Basically I have a cable modem that is plugged into my system, and on
windows xp I am able to connect to the internet "just like that". I
don't think windows uses dhcp. I hope someone can help me on this...

Windows XP will use DHCP "just like that" as will Ubuntu, particularly
if you use a cable modem.

If you have a problem, it will be an ethernet connection problem. With
Ubuntu installed, open a terminal and post the response to:

sudo ifconfig eth0

and the "ethernet controller" part of the response to:

lspci -v

And, remembering that your live CD is 2 years old, try a newer version.

If you are connecting a cable modem to your computer with an ethernet
cable, it should be absolutely no problem - that is exactly what I do.

Old version are liable not to support new hardware.

And then you blame the OS.

Tell us here. why in the world would you expect people to go off and read
four different things in order to help you? Are you willing to pay? My
rates are $200/hr.

Your cable modem came with software made by your ISP designed to control
the modem and your connection in windows. Or have you forgotten that?

You need to tell us.
a) what brand cable modem is it? Is it plugged in via an ethernet cable or
via a usb cable?
b) When you do ipconfig what is the IP address listed for your computer?
c)Who is your cable provider?

No the isp people simply connected the modem to my computer through a
port where a computer would normally connect to a LAN or a similar
network. There was no software involved.

Ah, you mean someone came to your house, installed the modem, and started
things up for you.

Anyway, it sounds like you have a normal ethernet connected modem. They
either issued you with an ip address or you get it via dhcp.
Look at ipconfig and look at the ip address which you have.
Copy it to Linux. (I am sure Ubuntu has a set up wizard. Tell it you want
manual setup up and enter it. )

Tried that too...Went to System>Administration>Networking and
configured my ethernet card to "static ip address" and entered the ip
address, subnet mask, and default gateway. But I could not ping my
gateway or any other site...

But, after modifying the network info, you need to deactivate, count to
three, and then reactivate that network card, so it will connect with
the new parameters.

Almost like having to reboot in Windows, every time something is clicked
on in their BSD stack of network hacks that comprises the Microsoft
attempt at networking.

No wonder all MS hosting is from the 15,000 BSD Hotmail, or the 15,000
GNU/Linux Akamai leased servers!

What IP address information have you entered? Are you entering the same info
you're using in Windows? Can you PING yourself on the IP address you've
entered? What about 127.0.0.1. What's the output of ifconfig eth0?

Oh just a thought. When you've entered the info in Ubuntu is the
interface "up"? Try ifconfig eth0 up in the shell.
