What type of name resolution does Remote Desktop use?

I am looking at an issue where a user cannot connect to a server via Remote
Desktop or Terminal services by server name. IP address is OK.
It looks as though this is a name resolution problem.
Can anyone tell me what type of name resolution Remote Desktop and Terminal
services use? I am assuming it is TCP/IP Host Name resolution with DNS - but
can anyone confirm that is it TCP/IP Host with DNS vs. NetBios over TCP/IP
with WINS?

Remote Desktop doesn't do name resoltion at all,...the OS's Networking
subsystem does.

If you use an IP#,...there is no resolution.
If you use the single-word machinename,...netbios naming is used (or WINS,
or DNS in some setups)
If you use a dotted-notation name,...DNS is used.
