two wireless networks in the same building

Hi all,
Need to know if two wireless networks would work in the same building
without interference:
I have:
one network with desktops and wireless access points for laptops. (three
wireless access points in a one story building)
I have another network that does not have wireless only hard wired.
Both networks are using the private 192.168.1. ip addressing which works
fine since they are connecting to different servers and have different
switches. (both servers are in the same room)
Can I add wireless laptops to my network that is only hard wired with 3
access points for laptops without it interferring with the other wireless
access points? In other words, how do I make sure that they try to connect
to the right wireless access points? Do I have to do something different on
the server?
I cannot combine the networks as the wireless one is a vendor specific
program that has to be kept seperate.
Thanks in advance for any help on this.
Sher

Each access point has its own Station ID (SSID) that you can name, eg.
"FrontOffice" and the other "Accounting". Set a different WPA passphrase for
each, The Clients will see both SSID's in the available wireless networks
list, Connect to the SSID that you want for that client and then set the
client to only connect to that SSID or it will auto connect to the best
signal.

You only have one network. A Wireless Access Point is not a network, it
creates an "area" of radio influence where a wireless device can connect to
the WAP and gain access to the one wired network. Keep that in mind,..it is
import to understand that.

Yes, you can run multiple overlapping WAPs. If they overlap too much then
they need to be on a different Channel (choose 1, 6, or 11). You can
create a "Roaming" situation if you want,..but I doubt you want that,...and
it is complex to do.

The Laptops connect to the WAP based on a priority preference list or by
whatever has the strongest signal. They can only automatically connect to a
WAP that you have already given them the Key and have been on them once
before.

What in the world does that mean?

Hi Phillip,
I probably did not make myself clear, I do have two seperate networks.
(only one has wireless connections plus wired connections. The other only
has wired connections.) They are on diffterent switches and connect to
different servers. The vendor who supports the one that has wireless
connections does not want their program ran with any others. (I have users
that have a kvm switch that switches them from one cpu to another cpu.
Hence, they have two seperate computers, one for each network.
I understand about the priority preference list to connect to the WAPS, but
don't understand if once I setup the second network with WAPS and wireless
laptops will their be interferecne between the WAPS from both networks.
network#1=server, WAPS, Wired desktops, wireless laptops, private IPs
network#2=server, wired desktops, private IPs
users=2 computers, one for each network

The same principle applys to the WAPs no matter what network they are one.
A WAP has no concept of a "network",...it would not know a network if it
tripped over one. But you don't want two or more WAPs in the same area
running on the same channel or they will step on each other just like any
other device running on Radio technology would do. The Channels has to be
far enough apart so they don't overlap and since each Channnel shares part
of the Frequency with other Channels you have to space them with a gap of 5.
The range is 1 thru 11,...so that means you can have up to three in the same
area by setting their channels on 1, 6, and 11. Other WAPs will have to be
physically far enough apart to not get in each others way.

As far as what PC connects to what WAP,...you have to control that yourself.
A PC will remember the Key you used to get connected to a WAP once it has
been done,...so don't give Keys to Laptops for WAPs they aren't supposed to
connect to. As far as PCs that may use more than one WAP you can set an
order or preference,...and beyond that if it connects to the wrong WAP on
its own, just disconnect it and connect it to the one you want,...the user
has to take some responsibility for what they are doing. Cars don't drive
themselves down the street without drivers,...Laptops aren't going to be
doing their jobs without humans in control either.
