I noticed that there a two identical IPs in DNS pointing to 2
different servers. Then the main server (2008SBS) has two preferred
IPs if I ipconfig it where one of them is the doubled one which is
also the IP of the mail server. How's that possible?

Yaro,
It is possible if the host registered that address in DNS and it has not
been scavenged out. If you sort DNS by IP address you will often find
duplicates.

Just an update. It's Standard edition not SBS.
How do I make sure it's not really a live server
on that clone address. I have only remote access
to the office. Thanks

Yaro, did you use the same IP address for the mail server before the
SBS?

I don't know what was the setup. I just recently started to work for
that
company. What you're saying is possible as MDaemon runs on the
main server now and I can't log in to the mail server. How can this be
tested
to be sure that's the case and if so can I just get rid of that old
DNS record?
Thanks

Remotely?
I guess you would either use a port scanner to see if anything responds on
that address; or look at the ARP table on a router to see if anything is
there.
Or delete it and put it back if anything breaks. It is "only" a DNS record,

It's not the same server, is it? I mean the server with Windows 2003
standard edition with the mail server are (or used to be) two
different machines, right?
If you can't logon to the mail server, probably it doesn't exist
anymore. So the DNS entry isn't needed anymore.
But if you're not sure, leave it that way so scavenging will do the
job for you.

Advanced port scanner shows only the main server having that
particular IP address.
How often DNS scavenging runs as it looks like they both have been
here for a while
and so far the duplicated record has not been removed? Do I need to
run it manually?

If scavenging is enabled, the default value is 7 days, but you can
change it if needed.
Keep in mind that the sorter this period is, the longest time is taken
for DNS queries.
Is scavenging enabled?

Looks like scavenging is disabled in this case or there is some reason
for that duplicate entry like well I don't know but maybe pretending
to be the old server or something which I do not know about. Would
this make sense?
