Hi

I was approached by a colleage at work who is looking at BT broadband. He
currently has one master socket and one extension both of which have PCs
attached as well as phones and currently use dialup.

Is there a way to use the extension as well as the master socket to run
each PC on broadband without replacing the wiring or using wireless.

Thanks for your help

Baz

I presume that each PC currently has its own modem, and that only one of
them is connected to the internet at a time?

Your colleague can replicate this arrangement with broadband - by fitting a
broadband modem to each PC and only using one at a time, as before. Each
phone socket will need a filter if a phone is also going to be plugged in.

However, a far better arrangement would be to use an ADSL router, plus a
network card in each PC - which will allow the connection to be shared so
that both PCs can be on line at the same time. Connections between the
router and the PCs can be either wired or wireless, depending on preference
and convenience.

Yes - you could have an ADSL modem plugged in on each computer, also
if you wanted to use both sockets for the phone you would need a
microfilter plugged into each one as well.

However under this setup you would only be able to have one computer
online at any point, not both at the same time.

If you wanted to be able to have both online at the same time, you
would either need to have one computer acting as a router (Internet
Connection Sharing) and connect it with wires or radio to the other -
this is what I do, though it has the disadvantage in that the router
computer has to be on for you to access the internet with the other
computer.

Or, alternatively, you could buy a router so that both computers
independently access the Internet.

BT sell a router product that can do the networking part over telephone
lines:

The sensible answer is no. Yes you could have two ADSL modems but then
you have the difficulty of ensuring they are never going to try and
compete for the line.

A router is the way to go with ethernet between the computers. One
option to consider if wishing to avoid installing more wires or using
wireless would be making the ethernet connection between the PCs over
the mains wiring with kit like:-

There are also similar boxes that will allow you to extend a network
over the internal phone wiring - although these seem to have lost
popularity in these Wi-Fi days.

BT Home Network 1250 will allow you to do just this and alot more.
ADSL Guide did a review on the older model:

There is also the Network 1800 (Office in an hour) high end Model.
