two names associated to one computer

i have two computers that were reformatted and renamed, then joined back to
the domain. now there are two names accociated with them, the old name and
the new name are both associated with the same IP. how do i remove the
association with the original name and reidrect to the new name.

Unjoin them from the Domain

Delete both the old and the new accounts

Delete any DNS enties for either names

Delete any WINS entries for either names

Join them to the Domain.

sorry for all the questions, new to working with server and AD enviroments

This is in an AD , so i would Unjoin them, and then delete the computer
names from ADUC

where do i find the DNS and WINS entries.

DNS entries would be in the DNS server, are you using the DC as your DNS
server or another computer?

WINS would be in your WINS server, often this is the same as your DC but
like DNS can be hosted on another computer.

when you say unjoin, you mean to go to my computer properties, selecte
computer name tab, select workgroup instead of domain and give the workgroup
a name.

when i do this, will i need to remove the object from the ADUC also, or qill
his be done automatically.

we have a primary and a secondary DNS Server and they are both DC

the reason i am wanting to know how to fix this is because, the IT manager is
wanting me to go through and reformat all of the systems for the company, and
they want the to follow a specific naming convention. I do not want to have
to deal with this problem for about 75computer.

Usually it does it automatically, but sometimes when there are problems it
does not,...so I just want you to make sure it happens.

When it works correctly, it all happens automatically. But sometimes there
are problems.
Do a few machines at a time so if problems come up it won't be overwhelming.

ok. I have been able to remove the computers from the Domain (although the
object is still in AD, with a red x on it), and rename them.
now the issue I am having is that the old name is still defaulting to the IP
address when i ping it. Do i need to delete the object from AD so i can
reuse the old name, the comany has a specific naming convention for their
computers and i need to be able to use this old computer name with a new IP.
Or can i set up a new computer with the old name and IP, then change the IP.
