Two linksys WRT54G's working together?

I have a linksys WRT54G connected to my cable modem, in my office at one end
of my house. A couple of PCs are wired to it, as well as a wired 4 port hub
at the other end of my house. I use a wireless laptop as well. The area
near the 4 port hub gets lousy or no wireless signal. Can I use an
additional WRT54G connected to the hub at that end to improve things? Or
must I go with a WAP54G or WRE54G? The WRT54G is the cheapest alternative,
but the possible config issues worry me. Thanks much!

Most wireless routers can be configured as wireless access points. Some
wireless routers can have the wireless broadcast turned off. I am not
familar with Linksys so I don't know for sure about the WRT54G. And I am
not sure if you can have two wireless access points on the same network.

Good luck, jimbo

At one point I tried wiring a 2nd WRT54G to the main one, to work as an
access point only, but failed miserably. Somehow "turning off DCHP" wasn't
enough. The WRE is designed to do nothing but receive a wireless signal and
amplify it, however it is pricier than the other options.

I suppose you need the "repeater" function for your application. If
you want both wireless devices to broadcast but one just amplifies the
signal, I would guess that a router will not work. (As you have
discovered.)

Good luck, jimbo

Really?

The three i have got could not and the last one: an EDIMAX 6104 pretended to
do, but could not neither.

Which (affordable) WR, with AP feature and possibly with an integrated DSL
modem, would you recommend?
Can it also connect to other brand AP's?

Any D-Link or Netgear wireless router can be configured as an access
point. All it takes is to turn OFF DHCP. I am using a Netgear in that
mode right now. The Netgear is connected to one of the ethernet ports
of a D-Link wired router. The D-Link is connected to my cable modem
and is the "main" (Gateway)router. The Netgear only provides extra
ethernet ports and wireless access. And be sure you give the access
point (Netgear in my case.) a unique IP address. My D-Link is
192.168.0.1. Netgear default is also 192.168.0.1 so I changed it to
192.168.0.2.

Good luck, jimbo

We probably were speaking about two different thinks.
I thought about a WR configured as an access point _client_ to forward the
wireless network to another wired island with no wired link between the two
routers.
