Hi all,

I will configure two domaincontrollers for out network so when one
goes down the other makes sure that people can log on and work normally.
I know I have to divide the rules as rid master, pda, domain naming master
etc.
over these two domaincontrollers.
But do I also have make both domaincontrollers Global Catalog.
Is there an advantage, disadvantage if I configure this. Or isn't this
necessary.

Thx in advance.

Ramon

Hi Ramon,

You can keep Flexible Single Master Operations (FSMO) roles (Schema Master,
Domain naming master, Infrastructure Master, Relative ID (RID) Master, PDC
Emulator) on one server. If this is the server that will go down you can
always size the roles if the server is not coming back or will be
unavailable for longer time. Also both servers must be global catalogs.

How To View and Transfer FSMO Roles in Windows Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/default...uct=winsvr2003

Using Ntdsutil.exe to seize or transfer FSMO roles to a domain controller
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/255504

Since clients use DNS for finding domain controllers, global catalogs and
other information about your domain you must make both server DNS servers
for your active directory domain (you can use Active Directory Integrated
zones). On your clients both servers must be entered under TCP/IP (for
preferred DNS and alternative DNS.
If your only DNS server goes down (or if the clients has only preferred DNS
information and this is the server that went down) your clients won't be
able to find the other domain controller on your network.

Will any of these servers also be a DHCP? If so make sure that you also have
this service running on both servers...

I hope this helps,

Mike

Hi Miha,

Thx for your answer,

From an article from Microsoft I saw it was best to divide the fsmo roles.
domain naming master and schema master as long with GC on one server
and the other 3 roles on the other server.

Can you explain to me why both domaincontrollers MUST be GC.

Ramon

Hi,

If your only GC goes down, your users won't be able to logon to domain.
