Hi guys!

I used to have the following set-up:

DSL modem-> Linux box w firewall/NAT/DHCP->hub-> Win XP Home box. The
hub was used when I connected a laptop occationally.

Now I want to move the boxes to another room and bought a D-Link 624
access point router + one D-link PCI wireless network adapter.
I realized (a bit late) that to actually get up to 54 Mbit/s theoretical
speed I have to put the wireless PCI network adapter in the Windows box.
It appears that Linux driver is not stable (free SW beta version).

I got the WinXP box to connect to internet via the router (I have Norton
Firewall so it is not totally exposed).
My question is: How do I connect my Linux box as subnet? I tried the
following:
Connected the WinXP box to the Linux box with a patch cable
Tried to activate WinXP Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) with the
Config network wizard: It executed forever, had to quit it.
Tried manually: found out that ICS wants to allocate 192.168.0.1 already
occupied by the the D-link router. Changed that and tried again and
fiddled around with gateway address, setting a static address on the
Linux box and tried again and so on and so forth. I did no get it to
work.
Could it be a DHCP problem? The D-Link router supplies a dynamic IP
address to the XP box. So does ICS.
Is the set-up wrong? Is XP Home not fully functional?

Regards,
B.A.

Clarification needed, are you going winxp/linux-->router-->internet or are
you doing linux-->router-->winxp-->internet ?

If you are doing winxp/linux-->router-->internet (broadband to router)you
should have your internet device connected to the wan port and set up
through the appropriate menus in the router. Also enable dhcp client on
the linux box and the windows box and allow the router to do the dhcp
service. The router will set itself as the gateway address.

If you are doing linux-->router-->winxp-->internet (dialup on the winxp
box) you should disable dhcp all around.. ignore the existance of the
router and set the ips sequincially (duh) and same subnet, and set the
gateway address on the linux box to be the ip of the winxp box. From
there you must fuss with ICS or get a third party app such as winproxy to
make the windows box route the proper stuff to the linux box. (I have no
experience in using ICS)

Im doing exactly the opposite network setup as my linux box does the
dialing and routing, and the winxp box is the client to the linux box I
use guarddog and gidedog found on www.freshmeat.net for setting the
firewall and port forwarding required. (trolls dont poo me, I did ipmasq
and forwarding by hand in vi through 3 os versions/installs, this software
pair just made reconfigure a hell of a lot faster)
