Hi. We have recently deployed a new Windows 2003 network and have noticed
today that in the DNS console we have two _mscds folders, one outside the
DOMAIN.NET folder and one insite the DOMAIN.NET folder. The folder outside
the DOMAIN.NET folder contains all the usual entries that it should contain
and the greyed out version inside the DOMAIN.NET folder contains one NS
Entry for one of the two domain controllers. I have listed below the
current structure, if anyone can please advise if this is normal or if we
need to take any action it would be appreciated:

Alex.

DC1
Forward Lookup Zone
_msdcs.DOMAIN.NET
dc
.......
domains
.......
gc
.......
pdc
.......

DOMAIN.NET
_msdcs (this is greyed out folder)
Only entry inside this folder one NS Entry - dc1.domain.net
_sites
........
_tcp
........
_udp
........
DomainDnsZones
........
ForestDnsZones
........
Reverse Lookup Zone

DON'T TOUCH THEM or you will be posting back with problems and asking how to
put them back. The grayed out one is a delegation saying to go look on this
server for the _.msdcs.domain.net zone. This zone replication is set forest
wide and has info for the whole forest on where the root is and what DCs are
GCs.

Hi Ace. Thanks for the clarification. If possible can I just check why the
greyed out _msdcs only contains the one NS Entry to DC1 when we have DNS
running on two domain controllers, DC1 and DC2 ? Should both DNS servers be
listed ?

Yes, all DNS servers with the full _msdcs.domain.net zone should be listed
in the delegation.
