tv antenna for wi-fi?

Just reading on the net and a book about all the do-it yourself yagi
antennas,
some end up looking like small tv antennas (remember those) well my
house came with a giant one and I wonder if I could attach it to
my wi-fi network. I have dlink stuff, a dlink di-614+ router and a
mix of pc and sun boxes on my network (both cat5 and 802.11b wireless).

I don't use the tv antenna for anything, it must be 8 feet long and
I'd like to share my internet connection with my neighbor who is about
500 feet away. I figure I could just try it, but before I start I
thought I'd ask in here if anyone else has used a tv antenna as a
wi-fi antenna?

Post any questions and I'll answer them as I am new to this wi-fi stuff.

tia,
-Greg

500 feet? Jeez ... you could just about use a paperclip for an antenna
for that.

500 feet .....
If you can't get a good signal by placing the 614 in a room closest to your
neighbor's house
then consider taking the antenna off your roof and simply mounting your 614
in a plastic box such as from
Pelican and purchase the PoE adapter from Dlink. You can get something
fancier from
http://www.demarctech.com/store/cata...=21_30&product
s_id=53

You can try it on a sunny weekend by strapping your router to the mast. If
everything works out
then purchase a plastic weather proof case ( $25 to $70) Leave it there
just long enough to test!

Might burn out your router with standing waves from impedance mismatch.
