This is exactly what I'm looking to do. I know of only one software package
out there that will do this, but it is a big company and doubt it would be
cheap. its called Segue, the program is Soft Access Point Module.

Anyways, using pretty much any standard WiFi PCI card in a PC, is there is a
'relatively' simple way to turn your machine into a router or WAP? I though
just putting it on AD-HOC and sharing the internet over the signal...but I
dont know.

You dont have to be untechnical, i'm a 4th year Comp.Sci. university student
But any help would be appreciated.

Cheers!
Kailey

Yeah, it's out there on Google as far as the router is concerned, if
you're talking MS.

If you have any inkling as to what to look for, let me know!

Thanks

Why not use Microsoft's ICS and Ad Hoc for sharing the Internet?

Is it that simple? I have looked it up and it sounds like it would be, but
I have also heard some people say they couldn't get it to work.

I'll see once I get a wireless card for my PC.

Thanks.

This should work. Also, you might try network bridging, although it appears
that there may be a problem bridging some wifi cards to Ethernet. Search for
the article
Bridge May Not Work With a Non-Promiscuous Mode Network Adapter

in the Microsoft Knowledge base.

BTW, you won't be able to run your wifi client card as an actual AP. You can
run it in ad-hoc mode, and if your only purpose is to provide shared access
to the internet to 3 or 4 other hosts, there's no important difference.

Really, all you have to do is install two network cards on a MS NT based
O/S machine. One facing the Internet connected to the modem. The other
card facing the LAN with ICS enabled on the card. Then you can use a
stand alone hub or switch -- the switch is better and plug it into the
the LAN card. Then you plug each machine into the hub or switch. Each
machine connected to the hub or switch will get a DHCP IP from the router
machine. The NT based machine has DHCP services running on the machine.

http://www.homenethelp.com/web/explain/about-NAT.asp

The first paragraph or two talks about NAT and MS's ICS.

I hope you're going to run a host based FW on the machine.

You may want to harden the machine to attack -- link talks about all the
MS O/S(s)

http://www.uksecurityonline.com/husdg/windows2000.php

You may want to look-up what a Bastion Host is about.

You can build a free wireless access point using Linux as an operating system.
