I bouth a wireless cable router and a USB adapter for the second PC that I
want to share my internet with. I followed the instructions and it seemed
to work the first time. After 2 days or so the second computer would not
have internet. So, I looked at the settings on the 2nd comp and everything
seemed to match. After some time it worked again but maybe a day later it
was not working again. So now I tried to freshly set up my router again on
the primary computer and nothing is working....All the cable are connected
and whatnot but I keep losing my internet during setup and I cannot continue
setup. I have cable internet and am using an ethernet card. Is it hopeless
and I am out $200 plus for the adapter and router or am I just doing
something SERIOUSLY wrong. Any help would be appreciated and would prevent
damage to the aforementioned router by launching it through a window.

Thanks!

I'd try to test the router first. Connect the Ethernet cable from the cable
modem directly into the Ethernet card of comp1 and see if you can get on the
Net. If not, call the cable company since something's most likely wrong on
their end assuming you followed their setup directions for a one computer
system.

If you're able to get the Ethernet computer working directly as above, then
put the router into the system. Connect the cable modem to the WAN port of
the router and your comp's Ethernet card to one of the router's ports. You
should see green lights on the router port and Ethernet card indicating the
correct cable (no crossover cable needed). If not, move the computer's cable
to the UPLINK port on the router. There might be a push button you can
press... do so until you see the green light on your comp's Ethernet card.

Assuming you're connected correctly, you should get on the Net with comp 1.
If nothing connects, check how the router is set up to connect to the cable
modem. Here again, the cable company should have instructions as to the
"Settings" for the router. Until you get your #1 comp working through the
router, no need to think about the second... that'll be very easy.

I have the MR 314 Router by Netgear and the Netgear PC card MA 401.

I can see on both the desktop and the laptop the Internet and Mail. Can send
and receive mail, but I cannot see from the desktop the Laptop and vice
versa.

Printer and Folder sharing is enabled.

Using WINXP on both machines.

Signal strength is decent.

BTW I see on the desktop (which is connected to the router) no NETGEAR in
the Network configuration, only 1394 and Local LAN connections.

The CD of the MR 314 has no install or setup on it.

What am I doing wrong?
