Trying to set up direct ethernet connection between Windows 98 and new iMac

Hi.

I've just bought a new iMac, and am trying to transfer files from my Windows
98 laptop to the iMac. I haven't been able to get a connection at all. I have
a crossover ethernet cable between them, and am using a Belkin CardBus
Network PC card for the laptop.

Any suggestions on how to get these two to recognize each other? I have
been told by several people that this is simple. But I must have something
set wrong in one or the other computers. I've never done any networking at
all with Windows, so it's entirely possible I'm missing something.

Anyone know how to do this?

Thanks.

Are you using FTP, or what?

I was told to turn on file sharing on both computers, and the only thing
that's gotten me anywhere is using the Connect to Server on the iMac which
tries to connect to an IP address. What I've put in this that works so far is
smb://192.168.25.15/cutedog/ but now I'm getting failures that tell me
either my user name or password is wrong. At least it got that far.

In Network Neighborhood, the thing that seems to get me the farthest is
setting Access Control to "Share-level Access control". This says it enables
me to supply a password for each shared resource. When I do give it the
password that I know I use for the user it says, it tells me that either the
name or password is not correct. At least it's getting that far. If I have it set
to User-level access control, it asks me where to get the list of users and
passwords from, and I have no idea what to do for that.

And now with the latest IP addresses the help desk lady gave me, I can at
least ping the laptop, so I'm getting closer. So the question is how I get
access to the files in the Windows 98 laptop to transfer them.

Thanks.

Ah, I've found it!

I had to go to the folder I wanted to share, and set the properties of that
folder to allow sharing, and then set the password I wanted to use. It's all
right there. I found it using the help under the Start Menu.

Sorry for taking up your time.
