trying to connect mac OS 8.6 to 2003 file server

I used to have this mac connect to a snap server. Now I moved these
files share to a Windows 2003 server and cannot connect. I can click
on File > Chooser > Appleshare > and see my old server listed as
available and I can connect successfully. However the new fileserver
is not listed. Appletalk is enabled for the 2003 fileserver. Any help
would be appreciated. I'm thinking there are some other
protocols/services that need to be installed but I"m not sure. Thanks
for your help.

Have you share the folder as Mac sharing?

I'm not exactly sure what you mean. The only setting I have on the
Windows 2003 server is the appletalk protocol added and enabled. I
really haven't changed anything on the windows side. On the mac client
I am not sharing anything at all.

My friend, I don't mean to be disrespectful at all, but as far as
practical use of time is concerned, why don't you forget about sharing
files w/ the OS 8.6 Mac, spend the time that you would otherwise use
trying to figure out, working. Take that money that you make working
(using your time more efficiently), and buy a NEW mac (mac mini is
$499). It comes with OS X 10.4.5. It will automatically connect to a
windows server by using (from the Finder) the menu: Go -> Connect. Then
you type the address of the server, w/ smb:// before it, such as
smb://192.168.0.2. You will then be prompted to enter the username and
password for your server, and your on. Piece of cake. In the future you
can set it up to auto-mount upon login, or save it in your favorites.
By the way, SMB stands for Server Message Block, which is the default
file sharing protocol used by Windows 2000, XP, 2003 (although NetBIOS
is also still functional at the same time). If you don't use smb://,
then the computer will automatically assume afp:// (which is the Apple
File Protocol). Hope this is helpful.

Now if you are just persistent on getting your server to work w/ your
8.6 Mac, then you need to install "File & Print Services for Macintosh"
on your Windows 2003 server, and make sure they are bound to your
network adapter.

Install by: Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Windows Components
-> Other Network Services (or something like that). There you just
check the box for File & Print Services for Macintosh.

After it installs, then go to your network adapter (Local Area
Connection properties), and make sure there is a check box next to File
& Print Services for Macintosh (and I think it should also have
AppleTalk Protocl).

Hope this helps. But really, get a new Mac. If you're not already
familiar with OS X, then you'll be able to get some current Mac skills,
which will be valuable for other work.

I appreciate your help and I"ll try this in a bit. To address your
suggestion of getting a new mac: we have a brand new G5 sitting right
next to this 8.6. However, we are a print house and have a contract
with printers who have customely setup this particular 8.6 setup with
the versions of quark, adobe, and other applications that must run and
spit out their pdfs the way the printer is designed to accept it. I
had this discussion many times. especially when I'm working on this and
see a G5 that is already connected to this file server sitting 1 foot
from this one that I cannot get to work. I sort of figured it was
another addition that I had to make to the file server but was clueless
since these are the only two macs we have in the building and for years
we've been reading from a snap server that didn't require the same
components that windows 2003 server does. Thanks for your help, i'm
sure this was the solution.

This worked, I now see the file server listed in the chooser. However
when I click on it. I enter my AD username/pwd and then all I see is
Microsoft UAM Volume. I installed the MS UAM installer and I right
clicked on my share in the MMC and "configured server for macintosh"
the only change I made was to give it a name and to "allow workstations
to save passwords" is checked w/ Apple clear text or Microsoft.

What i'm getting at is, I don't see my shares, just a few levels of
'appleshare' folders with nothing really in them. Is there another
settingthat I have to make on the server? I didn't see anything listed
in the network connections besides appletalk beneath tcp/ip, could this
be where I need to add something?
