I have ncpfs & ipxutils installed on my Mandrake9.1 workstation. My
ifconfig looks like this:

-----
[root@admin root]# ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:50:BA:E0:8D:EA
inet addr:129.1.1.34 Bcast:129.1.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
IPX/Ethernet 802.2 addr:00000001:0050BAE08DEA
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:7469 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:13
TX packets:580 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:26
RX bytes:1456222 (1.3 Mb) TX bytes:79160 (77.3 Kb)

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:151 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:151 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0
RX bytes:11202 (10.9 Kb) TX bytes:11202 (10.9 Kb)
------

As far as I can make out it looks like my IPX is working? but when I run
slist I get the following error:

------
[root@admin root]# slist
slist: Server not found (0x8847) in ncp_open
------

Anyone got an idea why I cannot see the NetWare server?

Did you exec "ipx_configure --auto_interface=on --auto_primary=on"
before all netware stuff?

Also try setting "set reply to get nearest server = on" on your Novell
server. For me this is necessary to connect to our local Novell
server (part of a multi-server WAN).
