with appologies to tender souls i would like to try again to get some
answers as to why after replacing my wired linksys router with a wirless
dlink router i can no longer serve my website, do ftp, VNC, VPN, or even
ping to my server from outside of my private network. i have contacted
eartlink/mindspring to find out if anything has changed with my account or
if they are blocking any ports - it has not and they are not. i provided a
list of items that were checked over by the dlink tech support team at least
4 times. any unlisted ideas would be welcome.
one last note - everything works fine with the linksys router.

- HTTP, FTP, and VNC virtual server has been addressed to the IP of the
webserver and is enabled
- DMZ has been enabled (but really shouldn't need to be)
- VPN has been enabled
- 3 ports were opened for VNC (56xx, 58xx, and 59xx.)
- my static IP address is valid and shows up on the status page of the
router's configuration application
- the router's firmware has been upgraded to lastest version.
- tried opening another port with assumption that 80 was blocked by ISP even
though port 80 works fine with LinkSys router
- tried to set webserver IP to one within the router's DHCP range.
- verified that router firewall is enabled and that no software firewall is
running.
- MTU lowered to 1492 by selecting PPPoE.
- static IP is entered correctly (else i would be able to ping it from my
private network and http nor ftp would not work either on the private
network - but they do).
that's it.

i hope the techs missed something.

thanks,
mcnewsxp

Do you have a software firewall like Zone Alarm, Sygate, Norton
Internet Security, etc.? If so, make sure that they recognize your
router's IP address. Also, make sure that the software firewall is
not preventing outbound access to your services, HTTP, FTP, etc. One
other thing, go to the command prompt and type ipconfig /all (if using
windows xp) and check the IP address. If it is 169.254...., your
system is not configured correctly. Can you access your wireless
router's configuration menu? If you've done all of these things, I
apologize.

Why are you assigning an IP address if the router is running a DHCP server?

The IP address may be correct, as it works on your LAN, but is the
default gateway address configured to point to your new router?
