True connection speed?

There's probably an FAQ about this somewhere but I'm too idle to look it up.
My BT Voyager 100 ADSL modem says I'm connected at 2.2 Mb/s but the fastest
download I have ever had is 127KB/s which is about half of what I expected
from a connection of this speed. So is the modem lying to me or is there
another reason I'm not getting downloads any faster? This applies to direct
FTP downloads not just torrent files.

Try here: -

http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/

for a fairly good indication of your connection speed.

Thanks, that was even slower than the result I got with System Mechanic. I
think I'm being capped by AOL at 1 Meg which is all I'm paying for.

Have you tried a few clicks on http://www.beelinebandwidthtest.com

What sort of results are you getting here?

Your modem is not lying it is indeed communicating with the DSLAM with a
downstream speed of 2Mbs (known as sync speed) but the ISP throttles the
actual data sent over the link to that which you are paying for. This saves
them from having the DSLAM reconfigured if you upgrade.

Have now, thank you.

Same as before. 119KB/s or 952Kb/s

It is becoming more common for ADSL lines to be synced at the highest
speed they will support, the ISP then throttles the connection to the
speed that is purchased.

That way, when you ask for a change of speed, you do not have to pay a
regrade fee as it simply requires a change to the ISP's gateway rather
than any work on BT's part.

Jambo

That site gave me a figure of 869.8 Kbits
adslguide.org.uk gave me a figure of 1935 Kbits.
My own monitoring of the data transferred agreed with the figures at the times of the
tests.
I have 2Mbits ADSL.

There seems to be a problem with that site.

I only get 966.7 Kbps at that site.

Yet 1792 Kbps at adslguide.

My own figures agree with fully adslguide

Same here.
