Request for Technical Support for Wireless Networking
using Windows98SE
Date Submitted: 23-May-2004
From: Robert Herman ((E-Mail Removed))
PROBLEM: Windows98SE PC cannot connect to internet or
map other PCs on network LAN
Suspected cause: may need to reconfigure W98 network
stack or TCP/IP properties
Equipment Used: 3 PCs on local network, configured as
follows
Buffalo G54 base station connected to cable internet on
WAN side, and DELL XPS Windows XP on LAN side
Buffalo G54 cardbus connected to DELL notebook PC
running Windows XP
Buffalo G54 PCI card connected to desktop PC running
Windows 98SE
Buffalo G54C repeater: not being used
Current connectivity:
DELL XPS able to connect to internet, run email, and can
access files on both notebook PC and desktop PC
DELL notebook able to connect to internet and run email,
access files on both DELL XPS and desktop PC
desktop PC can PING both of the other PCs, can PING the
base station (router), and can PING the cable modem
desktop PC cannot PING
www.yahoo.com, unable to find DNS
server when running internet explorer
desktop PC running Buffalo Client Manager connects to
base station at 30-50% signal strength, 11-54mbps
Troubleshooting Information:
winipcfg on desktop PC shows DNS server 192.168.11.1
broadcast node
ethernet adapter address 00-07-40-D8-96-85
IP adddress 192.168.11.5
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.11.1
DCHP server 192.168.11.1
I entered the Host Name as 192.168.11.5 and Domain name
as "Herman_internet"
TCP/IP properties for Buffalo PCI-G54 are set to obtain
IP address automatically
DNS is disabled
no gateways are installed
Internet Explorer connectivity is set to access via LAN
using automatic detect
No proxy server
primary network logon is set to Client for Microsoft
Networks
If I try entering DNS and gateway information into the
TCP/IP settings,
these are overwritten when using Buffalo client manager
to connect to base station
Notes: Norton Internet Security software on DELL XPS has
been disabled.
Firewall is NOT active on software or hardware settings.
Do any of the PCs need to have "internet connection
sharing" turned ON ??
DELL XPS shows default gateway, DNS server, and DCHP
server as 192.168.254.254
DELL XPS shows WAN IP as 67.169.27.180
I have written down all of the MAC addresses for each
adapter card.
PLEASE provide detailed instructions on how to proceed !
Is there any technical paper which gives step by step
instructions on how to reconfigure Win98 settings for
this specific situation ?
Thank you,
