I want to network my two computers. One has internet access using a cable
modem and Windows XP. The other one doesn't have internet and is using
Win98.. I bought a Lynksys Wireless router and hooked it up to the computer
with the internet access but cannot get the other computer on the internet.
What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for any help.

The WAN port of the router should be connected to the cable modem and
the two computers should be connected to two of the LAN ports on the
router. You may need to make a floppy of from the networking wizard on
the XP machine to use on the 98 machine. Check the Linksys web site for
more info.

But I thought its supposed to be wireless? You mention to connect the other
computer to the LAN port.

Well I don't know if it's a wireless card but it's definitely a network
card.

If you could explain to me how to hook the whole thing up I would appreciate
it.

Thanks.

Let me see, if i understand you correctly you installed a wireless router
and you cant talk to it. The idea of wireless is that the pc has a radio
based network card that broadcasts to the wireless router and the wireless
router broadcasts back to the pc. But in order for that to work you need a
special wireless network card. The router connects to the cable modem with
a cable but the communications between the pc and the router don't require
a cable its done via radio transmissions.
In the case of 2 pc's and a wireless router(gateway) you need to have both
pc's using a wireless network card and each one talking directly to the
router *or* 1 pc acting as a gateway using wireless to the router and that
pc having 2 network cards 1 is wireless and the other is a normal wired
type card. Then the pc#2 is connected to the pc#1 via the network cable and
pc#1 forwards all the traffic to&from pc#2 via wireless to the wireless
router using pc#1's wireless network card.
Hopefully you see the basic methodology now
let me know if that doesn't help clear things up for you.
Eric

See if anything here helps, there are plenty of other links there to look
at as well.

ORRRR...you could connect PC1 by wire to the router and then PC2
wirelessly to the router. That way you do not have to have 2 network
cards in any computer.
Either computer can be PC1 or PC2. BUT you MUST figure out if the
network card is wireless or not...to do this look on the back of the
computer at the card. Does it have a place for a wire to plug in or an
antenna sticking out of it? If it has an antenna it is wireless.
You also need to go into my computer, properties, computer name and
make a workgroup for both computers to be in. This is called by
default MSHOME, it can be ANYTHING you like but there are limits on
the numbers, letters, etc. you can use. I did one the other day and
they liked HOMIES! Caps or no caps makes no difference in this case.
BOTH computers need to be put in the same workgroup.
In Win98 you do it by right clicking network neighborhood, properties,
identification. You will also need to share the C drive on each
computer, my computer, open, right click C drive icon, click on
sharing and then say yes you understand and just want to share the
files and printers.
The 98 machine is slightly different but you should be able to figure
it out. This will let you be on one machine and be able to access the
other machines files. You also MUST have the EXACT SAME logon name AND
password on BOTH machines for this last part to work. Just create
another user if you must.

You didn't say anything about one of your computers being wireless.
