I recently wired my home with Cat5e cables. Suddenly my computers can
not connect. Sometimes they can see each other but that is all. What
I am wondering is the following:

1) When using Cat5e wiring, must ALL the patch cables also be Cat5e
or can Cat-5 work too?
2) Must I use a specific Router or will any work?
3) Must I change my network cards in my computers or will any Network
Card work?

Thanks in advance

Sounds as if you made a mistake in the wiring. Did you make your own
cables? What color guide did you use to punch down the jacks and
connectors?

Cat5 will work fine with 5e

Any should work (within its capabilities -- some are better than others)

Any should work

I agree with the other responder. You almost certainly didn't honor
the twisted pairings, or untwisted too much when connecting to the
keystones, or pinched the cable someplace. Simple connectivity is
not enough for a reliable connection.

BTW, in what sense is the change "sudden." Did you "fix" something
that wasn't broken, by any chance?

First off thank you for all the ideas. As for punch down I used a
"Leviton Intergrated Networkds" Cat 5e Jacks. I used the "A" punch
down colors for all computers. I have double checked the color scheme
several times and everything appears correct. I am still open to
suggestions.

Thanks a million

I've used those, and they should be fine. So you've ruled out the
most likely problem. When you checked them, I assume you confirmed
that only 1/2" +/- of cable was untwisted?

Do the status lights on the NICs and switches/hubs reveal any clues
when the problem occurs?

Ok time for me to look like a fool ( I hope not). I am not sure
exactly what you mean. I took the end of the Cat 5e wire and
seperated each of the 8 wires from one another. I then inserted each
wire, based on the color code, into the socket. Am I missing
something?

I now feel like Homer Simpson.

Did you use a crimping tool to make the final connections secure?
