trouble with talktalk modem

I'm trying to help a friend install talktalk on his pc. I installed
talktalk on his laptop with the modem provided and it all worked fine.
I then tried the same on his pc but it wouldn't install the modem. I
kept getting the error message "access is denied". I went into the
control panel and tried to install the modem there or update the driver
and kept getting the same message. Can't remember the make of the modem
(for those who have talktalk, it's the black modem, ie not the sagem).

I've never had this error message before. Does anyone have any ideas?

Your friend didn't have administrative rights, or logged you in on a
account which didn't...

If it is Windows XP Professional, ask if he has ever used the recovery
feature from the Windows CD. I always found when that was done it buggered
the computer up to the extent it still knew the old account as administrator
and everyone else just as a user. So it never worked when recovered as it
didn't recognise anyone as administrator. It's just one of those odd things
with Windows.
Check he isn't running something like Zone Alarm or another Firewall which
prevents hardware being installed when the security settings are to high.
If so, switch the program off and have another try, apart from that I have
no idea what you can do!
